After 20 years of good and loyal service, Paolo Guerrero has announced that he is ending his international career with Peru. The striker remains the top scorer in the history of the selection.
Peruvian striker José Paolo Guerrero, top scorer in Peru’s history, announced on Tuesday that he was ending his international career after 20 years in the national team. “The national team needs new people, new faces. What people are asking for are new players, so let’s give the young guys a chance.”told the press the 41-year-old player who made his debut for the national team on October 9, 2004 against Bolivia.
The match against Argentina on November 19 in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup (1-0 defeat) will remain as his last with Peru with whom he played 125 matches for 40 goals scored. His last goal in the Peruvian jersey dates back to March 2024, during a 4-1 friendly victory against the Dominican Republic in Lima. Having played for Bayern Munich, Hamburg and Corinthians in particular, Guerrero currently plays for the Alianza Lima club and has participated in six Copa Americas, and the World Cup in Russia in 2018.
