When the puppet comes to life, Marie Magalhaes’ voice changes. She adapts. A suitcase opens. A character appears. It’s his mother’s ghost. The actress and puppeteer Marie Magalhaes also brings back from the kingdom of the dead her father incarnated as a horse or even her great-grandmother from Galicia.
The Milagros show opens with memories of Portugal and brings to life the migratory stories of his ancestors. Marie Magalhaes, who lives in Loire-Atlantique, wrote it in 2023. Last year, the show took shape but is still in progress. This is still the case this week when Marie Magalhaes posed her puppets at the Fabrique à mots, for a five-day residency. Thursday, at 6 p.m., she will offer a public restitution.
“Everyone unravels a story”
The idea for this show germinated when his mother died three years ago. “I began to weave a need for memory. I found myself without a family. It was a necessity to bring to life the memory of what I heard, the words of my mother,” testifies the puppeteer. In these memories, there was “the figure of a great-grandmother” about whom her mother spoke to her a lot.
The actress brings these two characters back to life in her show. He tells “stories” of his parents, a Portuguese father and a Spanish mother, and of his ancestors. This motionless journey lasts an hour. “Puppets are ghosts. I’m going to the other side of the world to meet them. Everyone unravels a story,” confides Marie Magalhaes.
