For the first time since 2021, the Canadian is currently in a position to make the playoffs. Obviously, there is still a lot of hockey to be played… but the club is probably playing its best hockey in almost four years.

It’s been a long time since it’s been this pleasant to watch a CH match… because at the moment, the team is competitive.

That said, even if the club is playing big hockey these days, it must be remembered that a little over a month ago, it found itself in 32nd place in the circuit. To see CH in the top-8 in the East at the moment is almost a small miracle…

And we have to give credit to Martin St-Louis for all that.

The coach, whom some were ready to dismiss in November, managed to bring out the best in his group in the last month… and by the way Spittin’ ChicletsEric Engels was there with a sentence that was enough to provoke a reaction:

If CH makes the playoffs, who will be a better candidate for Jack-Adams than Martin St-Louis? – Eric Engels

And in fact, it’s not crazy: in the conversation, the name of Spencer Carbery (who is doing a huge job in Washington this season) comes up, but if St. Louis takes his group to the playoffs, he will deserve serious consideration.

In a world where MSL manages to qualify his team for the spring dance, that will mean that he has succeeded in relaunching his club after a very difficult start to the season and that he will have made the playoffs in a year where, even if we were talking about mixwe didn’t necessarily think we would see CH qualify.

Once again, there is still a full half-season to play… but I agree with Engels on this prediction.

If that happens, you’ll have to give a ton of credit to Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton for acquiring Patrik Laine and Alexandre Carrier (who are game changers in Montreal) as well as for graduating Jakub Dobes. On the other hand, it is currently the young players in town who are carrying the Canadian… and that is a sign that the coaching group is doing a lot of work to bring out the best from the group.

I’m not saying that St. Louis will absolutely win this trophy… but if he makes the playoffs, expect to see him get his share of votes. And if he wins the trophy because he doesn’t fall on vacation the day the regular season ends, he really won’t have stolen it, far from it.
