Barça have activated a radical plan for the winter transfer window, redefining their strategy after the implementation of the 1-1 salary rule. As the Catalan daily Sport recalls, the change forces the club to sell certain players in order to be able to register new recruits, mainly due to financial constraints linked to the salary cap. Sports director Deco, initially in favor of stability of the squad until June, modified his position, making departures possible this winter.
Frenkie De Jong concerned with housekeeping?
Among the players likely to leave the club, Ansu Fati, Eric Garcia and Christensen feature prominently, although Flick is hesitant on some of these cases. Barça is also listening to offers for Frenkie de Jong, since the latter seems reluctant to renew his contract. If the sales materialize, the objective is to generate funds or reduce the wage bill in order to recruit targeted reinforcement, in particular a physical midfielder or a versatile full-back.
The club has also made firm decisions regarding some key players like Araujo and De Jong: they will have to renew their contracts before the end of the season or will leave. Furthermore, although opportunities like that of Jonathan Tah are economically advantageous, Barça prefers to wait until the summer to finalize his arrival without paying compensation to Bayer Leverkusen. The club’s immediate priorities are the registration of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor, but the outcome of these efforts will directly depend on the sale of players.
