NFL: Chiefs plane delayed 4 hours before flying to Denver

The Chiefs finally took off from Kansas City International Airport for their game at Denver on Saturday after spending about four hours stranded on the tarmac amid an ice storm that blanketed the area in anticipation of a blizzard imminent.

The Chiefs tried to advance their flight as the weather, predicted since the beginning of the week, fell on them. But the plane they were supposed to use was delayed on arrival, so the team had to stick to its mid-afternoon departure. Just before takeoff, airport officials announced that all flight operations were suspended due to “rapid accumulation of ice.”

The jet chartered by the Chiefs was the first to take off as soon as airport operations resumed.

The Chiefs (15-1) clinched the conference’s first playoff seed and a first-round bye, making the regular-season finale moot for them. But the game has important meaning for Denver, which could clinch a playoff spot with a victory.

Earlier this week, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he plans to rest Patrick Mahomes, meaning backup Carson Wentz will get the start. Several key players on the team, such as Travis Kelce, Chris Jones and Isiah Pacheco will also be left out for the game.

The Chiefs will have to wait for the results of the last matches to know their opponent in the first round.
