Ice storm in Kansas City | The Chiefs take off after 4 hours of delay

(Kansas City) The Chiefs were finally able to take off after about four hours of delay due to an ice storm that forced the shutdown of operations at the Kansas City airport, hours before their game against the Broncos, Sunday in Denver.

The Chiefs tried to advance their flight to avoid the storm, but the plane they were supposed to use was slow to arrive, and the team had to stick to its mid-afternoon departure.

The airport announced at 2:50 p.m. local time that all flight operations were halted due to “rapid accumulation of ice.”

A break in bad weather at the end of the afternoon, between the freezing rain and a generous snowfall expected in the evening until Sunday, allowed the slopes to be de-iced. The Chiefs flight was the first to take off when operations resumed.

The Chiefs (15-1) have secured first place in the American Conference and a bye in the first round of the playoffs, so their final game of the season has no significance. It’s quite the opposite for the Broncos, who could advance to the playoffs with a victory.

Earlier this week, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced that he planned to give his quarterback Patrick Mahomes a day off and hand over the reins of the offensive unit to reserve Carson Wentz.
