Saturday December 28, 2024, Yannick Bestaven (Maître Coq) announced a damage to the steering system on his Imoca.

An uncontrollable bar

On Friday December 27 in the evening, “while sailing in rough seas, with 5 meters of waves and nearly 30 knots of wind, off the coast of the Pacific Ocean, our skipper had to drastically reduce speed to study a problem technical, which affects the rudder (system which connects the rudders, which are then connected to the pilot cylinders),” explained the Maître Coq team in a press release.

This damage makes the uncontrollable bar.

Temporary repairs

The skipper then spent a good part of the night in communication with the technical team to find a solution.

Yannick Bestaven set up “a temporary system using ropes”.

“This fallback solution forces Maître Coq to advance at a reduced speed until the repairs allow it to be blocked correctly,” announces his team. Yannick Bestaven is currently studying all repair possibilities with his team.

A damage which occurs only three days after the loss of his sail which the skipper had filmed.

Currently 11e of the Vendée Globe fleet, Yannick Bestaven is at approximately 550 kilometers from Cape Horn at the 11 a.m. clock.
