NHL: Alex Ovechkin could return to play on Saturday

Alex Ovechkin is very close to making a return to play, head coach Spencer Carbery said on Friday.

“We’ll see. Things are moving in the right direction. I can’t say he will be in the lineup tomorrow. We’ll have to see how he reacts in training today. We will know [s’il est prêt à revenir] tomorrow morning,” Carbery told reporters on the eve of the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ovechkin suffered a fractured fibula on October 18 in a game against the Utah Hockey Club.

The 39-year-old superstar scored two goals before leaving the game in the third period, bringing his total to 15 goals in 18 games, which was the best total in the league at the time.

Ovechkin is chasing Wayne Gretzky’s scoring record, and his five goals in two games before injuring his leg brought his career total to 868, 26 shy of Gretzky’s record of 894 .

The Moscow native was scoring at a rate that would have threatened Gretzky’s mark in March or April when he was injured.
