Manaea, 32, had a breakout season with the Mets in 2024. He went 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA and 184 strikeouts in 181 2/3 innings.
The left had signed a two-year agreement (one option year) with the Mets at the dawn of the 2024 season after two difficult campaigns with the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres. He recovered greatly in New York and decided to take advantage of the option in his contract to test the free agent market.
The contract, which is pending a medical review, will more than double Manaea's career earnings and continues owner Steve Cohen's spending spree since the start of the MLB offseason.
A few weeks ago, the Mets gave away the largest contract in sports history by signing Juan Soto for 15 seasons for the modest sum of $765 million. They also added right-handers Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas to their starting rotation to compensate for the departures of Luis Severino and Jose Quintana.
The Mets have spent no less than $916.25 million since the start of winter and their shopping may not be over yet. New York is still looking for a first baseman, while Pete Alonso is a free agent. An Alonso return to the Mets is far from impossible. The power hitter is expected to sign a deal worth more than $100 million.
