Algeria Football – Author of an exceptional season, a player from the Morocco team expresses his indignation at the latest controversy surrounding CAF's choices.
Ayoub El Kaabi, the striker of the Morocco team, is one of the big absentees from the list of nominees for the African Player of the Year trophy at the CAF Awards 2024. While other stars like Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are also absent, the Olympiakos striker nevertheless deserves a place among the ten best African footballers of the year 2024, due to his statistics impressive.
The past season was a real explosion for El Kaabi, who scored 33 goals and provided 3 assists in 50 matches for Olympiakos. His exceptional performances even allowed his team to win the Europa Conference League, a significant achievement. Despite these remarkable achievements, the 31-year-old striker was not included in the list of nominees, a decision that surprised many, including the main nominee.
Asked about this omission, El Kaabi expressed his surprise and disappointment. “I'm not going to lie, I worked hard to be one of the top ten African players. This is not the case, but I will continue to work. I was surprised, like many people, not to appear on the list because I had a very good season, but it’s their choice,” he confided in an interview with “Talents d “Africa” on Canal+Sport Afrique.
This absence raises the question of the transparency of the selection criteria and the importance of performances on the field in the face of the choices made by the governing bodies of African football. For El Kaabi, the road remains open, and despite this perceived injustice, he intends to continue to shine and prove his worth.
