Between lack of financial guaranteespolitical tensions, rumors of budget overruns, and inability to define governance with a leader, the organization of 2030 Winter Olympics in the Alps gets bogged down. However, in the regionswork is progressing. The IOC can only note and release ballast on the deadlines and incidentally on the vote on the guarantee….
No state guarantee in the special law
The special law recently passed in Parliament yesterday, supposed to ensure budgetary continuity while awaiting the final budget for 2025, does not provide for any state guarantee for the 2030 Olympic Games. This financial support has been awaited for a long time by the IOC which is showing patience, … but does it have a choice.
Committed regions and concrete progress
In the regions, things are working . On track for the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the South Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region voted for 2 deliberations Friday December 13 pour
- the Creation of the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Games Parliament of the Provence – Alpes – Côte d’Azur Region
- the creation of a preparation center for major international sporting events in the Ubaye valley
- approve the creation of the Organizing Committee for the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
- and the creation of the Company for the delivery of Olympic works for the 2030 French Alps Winter Games
In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes the deliberations will be voted on today and tomorrow. In addition regular meetings with the IOC allow progress on the technical, organizational and financial aspects of the file.
Serious doubts about the budget
Of the leaks on confidential reports from the General Inspectorate of Finance (IGF) cause trouble. According to a report from the General Inspectorate of Finance (IGF) commissioned by former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and revealed by The Letterthe overall budget should reach 2.4 billion euros – the application file announced 2 billion euros, we learned in September. Reports recently taken up by France TV point to a risk ofbudget explosion.
No consensus on the presidency
Another sticking point: the lack of consensus on the presidency of the organizing committee. If the name of Michel Barnier has been put forward, due to its diplomatic and political experience, the idea is not yet unanimous. Some people talk about a solution of co-presidencylike the successful tandem during the JO d’Albertville in 1992. According to the team, a mission to foreshadow the future COJOP was entrusted to former Prime Minister Michel Barnier (A role for former Prime Minister Michel Barnier in the organization of the 2030 Alps Olympic Games)
The IOC lets go
Faced with this situation, the IOC has no other solution than to let go. David Lappartientpresident of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF), hoped for a outcome before December 24making it possible to clarify governance and send a positive signal to the IOC. It was a few days ago. Still according to the team, the IOC postponed the creation of the COJOP until January….
Will the IOC be more careful the next time it awards the Olympic Games… we will see but we remember that for the Alps 2030 we attended a game of 3-cushion billiards against a backdrop of political crisis at the CNOSF.
