Will the Canadiens trade Joel Armia between now and the trade deadline in March?
Actually, I’ll ask my question again.
Will the Canadian succeed in trading Joel Armia between now and the trade deadline in March?
The veteran is in the last year of his contract ($3.4 million per season) and he will be free next summer.
This is especially what could help Kent Hughes send it to other lands.
But I’m talking about Armia today because several reporters at The Athletic were asked to “create” a trade with a team player.
Arpon Basu took care of it for the Canadian.
That said, here is Basu’s proposal:
- Joel Armia in return for David Spacek
The journalist explains his idea by saying that Spacek is one of the young right-handed defensemen who seems to be ready to play in the National League, but who belongs to a team aspiring to the Stanley Cup.
In Basu’s eyes, the Canadian would be inclined to trade Armia to acquire a defender of this style:
They (Canadians) would be much more willing to do something like that rather than trade Armia for a draft pick or two. –Arpon Basu
Basu suggests the name David Spacek… But who is David Spacek?
We’re talking about a young 21-year-old defender who throws from the right. He was drafted in the 5th round by the Wild during the 2022 draft while playing for the Sherbrooke Phoenix, and he made the jump to the pros during the last campaign.
And for those who are wondering: yes, he is the son of Jaroslav Spacek, who played for CH in the early 2010s!
He is mobile at 6 feet and 190 pounds and is capable of bringing some offensive touch to his game.
Spacek has two seasons of 50 or more points behind the tie in the QMJHL and he boasts 10 points (two goals) in 23 games this season in the American League, with the Wild’s farm club.
He was also excellent at the Junior World Championship in 2023 with the Czech Republic:
The acquisition of a right-hander like Spacek – who is knocking on the door of the NHL – would be interesting because in Montreal, the depth on the right of the defense is not enormous.
David Savard is slowing down, Justin Barron looks shuffled like a pack of cards, Reinbacher is injured… And Mailloux is having a tougher time in Laval lately.
Obviously, Spacek would not come to save the Canadian’s season and he would not finish the campaign in the top-3 of the votes for the Norris Trophy.
But if the CH is able to add depth while being able to get rid of a veteran who earns too much money for what he brings, it would be a good move.
In burst
– So much the better.
– It’s important, Captain.
– Oh!
– The Huskies have a new goalie.
