When he left the hospital, Remco Evenepoel recounts his fall: “I was catapulted to the other side of the road”

A few hours later, the man who was successfully operated on Tuesday evening was released from the hospital. And he came across a VTM team, to whom he gave an interview despite his broken right shoulder blade and hand, a broken rib, bruised lungs and a dislocated collarbone. “I suffer much more than after my fall at the Tour of the Basque Country, he did not hide. I didn’t have a very good night. I woke up at one in the morning and couldn’t really sleep. The doctors have done a lot of work, especially on my collarbone, and it will take time to recover. During the first month, I will not be allowed to do anything. Then we will measure the damage…”

Brabançon then returned to the conditions of the accident which saw him hit the open door of a bpost van in Oetingen, in Flemish Brabant. “This happened quite quickly. I felt the lady from bpost open her door. I thought I had managed to get away from the car but I was catapulted across the road. My hand and shoulder completely absorbed the shock. And once the adrenaline subsided, I immediately felt that things weren’t right…”

I sat on the side of the road for 30 or 40 minutes.

Several witnesses of the scene confided that the double Olympic champion was very “pale” after his fall. “I was a little confused, but luckily I was given some quick sugars. Then I tried to contact my family. Oumi wasn’t very far away, but there was a disruption on my phone network at the time, so I couldn’t reach anyone. Luckily someone who helped me through another network was able to reach Oumi. This all took a long time. I sat there for 30 to 40 minutes.” On a café chair, with a Coke offered by the local butcher, and with a blanket on your back.

Circumstances, injuries more serious than expected and consequences for his 2025 season: Remco Evenepoel’s winter turns into a nightmare

As he had already done in his message on social networks, Remco Evenepoel insisted not to blame the postwoman responsible for the collision. “She immediately wanted to help me and even gave me her coat, term-t-il. She was visibly upset, but she was just doing her job. In the postal service, things often have to move quickly. It was a small moment of inattention on his part, an unfortunate moment.

Which will be part of Remco’s history. A story unfortunately often marked by falls since the 2020 Tour of Lombardy.
