It is sad news that hits the world of wrestling with the death of champion Ambroise Sarr.

He left us this morning around 6 a.m., indicate members of the CNG de Lutte. Ambroise Sarr (73 years old), leaves an exceptional legacy and deep sadness among all those who knew him.

10 gold medals, 5 Olympics

His career as a wrestler and then coach was crowned with success. The wrestler from Palmarin has won no less than 10 African gold medals. A specialist in freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling, he is also one of the rare Senegalese athletes to have participated in 5 Olympics, an absolute record, including four as an athlete and one as a national coach.

Ambroise Sarr was one of the emblematic figures of the Senegalese struggle of the 1970s and 1980s, indicates Mamadou Koumé, journalist and former CEO of the APS. He also made his mark through his career as national coach of the national singles wrestling team. His contribution to this very local sport will forever be remembered.

As national coach of non-knock wrestling for 30 years, he forged champions and led the national team with incredible success. Under his leadership, the team has only lost three times in the final, in 2009, 2012 and 2023, an impressive record in international competitions. Moreover, it was after the title lost during the last African champion in Niger in 2023 that he announced his departure from the head of the national wrestling team.

To honor his memory, the mayor of Palmarin enthroned him in December 2023 as king of African arenas and even erected a monument in his honor. Ambroise Sarr will be buried in his native land in Palmarin. May his soul rest in peace.
