Rainbow armband causes controversy in the Premier League

For this 11th campaign aimed at promoting the inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in the Premier League, called Rainbow Laces, the wearing of the rainbow armband for Premier League captains caused controversy this weekend. After Ligue 1 last season, England is not spared from this type of controversy with two cases recorded. Initially, the Egyptian and Muslim captain of Ipswich Town Sam Morsy refused to wear this armband during the match against Nottingham Forest (0-1) because of his religious beliefs and is the only one not to have it door. A position that his club has not sanctioned because it wants to continue to respect the beliefs of its players but continues to act for the inclusion of everyone and supports the campaign. Another case linked to this rainbow armband took place this Saturday.

Simple warning for Guéhi

Marc Guéhi, captain of Crystal Palace, a Christian, also made headlines by writing a message “I love Jesus” on his armband during the match against Newcastle (1-1). A message that clearly shows distrust of the League’s initiative and the opportunity to express one’s Catholic faith. But it is an act which is punishable according to the regulations of the English Association which prohibit political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. However, the FA only issued a warning to the Eagles’ England international defender and did not choose to sanction him.
