FIFPro, the global players’ union, unveiled its list of nominees for its 2024 eleven with the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who were not among the finalists for the Ballon d’Or.

Here are Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi again. The two superstars of modern football are among the 26 nominated for the XI of the Year for the 2023-2024 season by FIFPro, the global players’ union. The Portuguese and the Argentinian, great rivals since the start of their careers in the 2000s, return to the forefront for this type of award after being absent from the finalists of the last edition of the Ballon d’Or. Messi has since been named among the eleven finalists for the FIFA The Best player trophy.

Players vote for their peers

Away from Europe in their respective clubs Al-Nassr (Saudi Arabia) and Inter Miami (United States), Ronaldo and Messi appear alongside six other players for a place in attack in his eleven. Frenchman Kylian Mbappé is there, as are Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Cole Palmer, Vinicius Jr and Lamine Yamal.

Another Frenchman appears in this list: Arsenal defender William Saliba. The nominees were chosen by players from around the world who will also determine the final composition of this eleven.

“Footballers choose the three players who, according to them, have distinguished themselves the most in each of the following positions: goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and attackers,” indicates FIFPro on the voting methods. “The goalkeeper, the three defenders, the three midfielders and the three attackers who obtained the most votes at their position are part of the World 11. 11th place is awarded to the outfield player who obtained the following number of votes the highest.” The final result will be revealed on December 9.

During the last edition, Lionel Messi appeared in this eleven within a four-man attack alongside Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.
