Tunis (© 2024 Afriquinfos) – Scheduled for February 2025, the African Nations Championship (CHAN) has experienced several cancellations. After Algeria and Egypt, it is Tunisia’s turn to withdraw from the competition dedicated to local players, citing an overly busy schedule.
Tunisia will not be present at the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN). This was decided by the standardization committee of the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF), which held a meeting on Thursday with club representatives. » The Standardization Committee in charge of managing the affairs of the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) agreed, this Thursday, with the presidents of the Ligue 1 clubs of professional football, to cancel the participation of the team of Tunisia at CHAN-2025″ can we read in a press release.
A “too busy schedule”, this is the reason given by FTF to justify its package for CHAN 2025, scheduled for 1is to February 28, 2025 and jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Before Tunisia, Algeria had already announced its withdrawal from the competition at the end of September, indicating that it would prefer to refocus on the youth and women’s categories. This will therefore make four countries from the UNAF Zone (North African Football Union), which will not be in the tournament. Egypt, which has never participated in CHAN since its creation in 2009, will once again be absent. Libya had also withdrawn a few weeks earlier.
These countries by withdrawing are exposed to sanctions from CAF. Fines ranging from 2,500 to 5,000 dollars but also exclusion from the next edition of the tournament. Algeria had already been there. Indeed, during the qualifications for the CHAN 2014 in South Africa, the country had already chosen to withdraw, which had led, in fact, to its exclusion from the qualifications for the following edition in 2016.
