It was an overall positive week for the Belgian coefficient. Union and Cercle won, Anderlecht and Club Brugge drew, and only La Gantoise lost. With 8 points out of 15, we can move forward – in the long term too.

It was another very busy week for Belgian football in Europe, and the results generally lived up to expectations.

Union and Cercle de Bruges won their matches, Anderlecht and Club Bruges drew against good opponents, while only La Gantoise lost in Lugano. That’s 8 points out of 15, but in terms of coefficient, that’s even 1,200 points out of a possible total of 2,000 for this week.

Another good week in Europe

This is important in view of, who knows, gaining additional places in Europe or obtaining better European tickets for the teams ranked 2nd and 3rd in the Jupiler Pro League.

Two seasons ago, Belgian clubs had accumulated no less than 14,200 points; Last season, the score was even better with 14,400 points, while this season we have already exceeded 7,000 points.

We are therefore on track to do as well, or even better, than the previous two years. Belgium is currently 8th in the UEFA rankings, thanks to bonus points from Club Brugge who qualified directly for the Champions League.

An extra ticket for the Champions League? Difficult

For the current season, we currently find ourselves in a superb third place, behind Portugal and England. Some are already starting to dream of a possible additional Champions League ticket – reserved for the top two each season.

However, due to the new system for awarding bonus points after the League Phase, this will become very difficult. The higher the teams finish, the more bonus points there are to be won.

In the Champions League, each team can score between 6,000 and 12,000 bonus points, while in the Europa League this goes up to 6,000 points, and finally only 4,000 points in the Conference League.

The more Belgian teams progress, the better. Is this a reason to panic at the moment? For the moment, certainly not, because we are closely following a number of countries and our five representatives can in principle reach the top 24.
