Roberto Martinez was full of praise for his captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, after Portugal’s penalty shootout victory over Slovenia.
“First of all, I think Cristiano is a constant example for us. When you see that he is the only player to have played in the Euro six times, and that he has this responsibility, this desire, this conviction as a young man, his emotions are incredible for someone who has won everything and experienced everything. He doesn’t need to carry so much.”Martinez said.
An undisputed leader according to Martinez
Despite missing a penalty earlier in the match, the Euro’s all-time leading scorer took responsibility by being the first shooter in the decisive penalty shootout. “After missing a penalty, he was the first shooter of the session. I knew, I was certain that he had to be the first shooter and show us the way to victory”said the coach.

According to the Seleçao coach, CR7’s behaviour impressed the entire team. “We are all very proud of our captain. The dressing room was delighted with what he did and I think he taught us all a lesson. The way he reacted is a real example.”he concluded.
With this qualification against Slovenia, Portugal will meet the French team in the quarter-finals. The kick-off will be given this Friday at 9 p.m. at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg.
