The New York Jets are turning to two former NFL general managers to help them find their next GM and head coach.
The 33rd Team company, which operates in media consulting and analysis and was started by former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, will help owner Woody Johnson in his research, told theAssociated Press a person familiar with the matter.
The chain ESPN and the daily New York Post were the first media outlets to reveal the information, which has not been confirmed by the Jets.
Tannenbaum and Rick Spielman, who served as GM of the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings, will be the main representatives of 33rd Team.
GM Joe Douglas was fired last Tuesday, while the Jets, who are 3-8 this season, believed they could aspire to the Super Bowl with a healthy Aaron Rodgers at the reins of the offensive unit. They should instead be excluded from the playoffs for a 14th year in a row.
Phil Savage, an advisor to the Jets football department since 2019, will serve in the interim for the remainder of the season.
Douglas’ firing came exactly six weeks after that of head coach Robert Saleh on October 8. The Jets were 2-3 at the time, winning just one of six games under interim defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.
The Jets will host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
