Promising but polarizing Russian forward Matvei Michkov agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level NHL contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

This news confirms for good the possible arrival in North America of Michkov, who thus leaves the SKA of Saint Petersburg, for which he was theoretically to play until 2026.

The 19-year-old was selected seventh overall in the 2023 draft by general manager Daniel Brière.

“I am extremely happy to become a member of the Flyers family,” Michkov said in a statement. “Playing in the NHL is a childhood dream of mine. I would like to thank the Flyers management for the trust. I did everything to meet expectations. I look forward to joining my teammates and preparing with them for the new season. I would especially like to greet our fans. I share with you the dream of winning the Stanley Cup.”

For his part, Brière said he was surprised to see hope arrive so early in his organization.

“When we drafted him last year, we didn’t think he would come with us a year later. It’s really exciting,” he said at a press conference.

“One of the things that excites me the most is that Matvei will learn from a head coach like John Tortorella,” Briere added. “I know he’s going to do a good job with him, like he does with everyone. He’s going to be tough and fair with him.”

“He won’t get a gift and he’ll have to prove himself. Considering what I’ve heard about his competitive spirit, it’ll be a lot of fun.”

“I expect him to play in the NHL and we’re going to give him the chance. He’ll have to earn his ice time. I hope he can help us on the power play in particular.”

Last year in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), Michkov scored 19 goals and provided 22 assists for 41 points in 48 games.
