Kasper Dolberg is now the top scorer in the Jupiler Pro League after his two goals against Gent. The Dane apparently scores with his eyes closed these days. And he has also become a free kick specialist!
Ten goals in his last five matches… Kasper Dolberg has never been so effective. The fact that he is allowed to take the free kicks in certain places helps of course. Especially when he sends them so brilliantly into the net. This time at 112 km/h, just 5 km/h less than his goal against Kortrijk.
“I don’t often practice free kicks, it was only the second time I took one,” Dolberg told our microphone after the match. “I have never played at a place where I was the official free-kick taker. At first I hesitated and wanted to give way to Anders (Dreyer). But when I saw the wall in place , there was too much space not to try. This second wall actually didn’t cover anything. It was good to take this chance.
His second goal, a technical gem, was also superb. “It wasn’t a perfect touch, but the finish was good. It feels fantastic. About the match itself: the red cards and the goals changed everything. The first twenty minutes weren’t our best , but we did what we had to do. It’s always a bit strange against ten players, but we took confidence from this 6-0 victory and hope to continue this momentum.
With his two goals, Dolberg is now alone at the top of the scorers’ table. Yet he remains humble. “To be top scorer? Cool, but that’s not the most important thing. I was already co-top scorer, so I thought I could be in the lead. But what really matters is to keep scoring and to win with the team.”
Dolberg looks at his current form in amazement. “I still believe in what I do and in the decisions I make. Maybe now I believe a little more. These kinds of periods are hard to explain, but I enjoy them. Have I ever had a period like this? No, I don’t think so. How long I can keep this up? No one can say, but I hope it lasts a little longer.”
