Thiago Almada joins Olympique Lyonnais… but on one condition

Thiago Almada, the talented Argentine midfielder, is set to join Olympique Lyonnais (OL) in January 2025. The 21-year-old player, who currently plays for Atlanta United in Major League Soccer (MLS), will be transferred to OL for an amount of 19.6 million euros, with potential bonuses of up to 3.7 million euros. This transfer was confirmed by OL owner John Textor, who reached an agreement with the American franchise.

This transaction represents a serious boost for OL, who were struggling to find creativity in their midfield. Almada, an international player with four caps and one goal for Argentina, should fill that gap. Standing at 1.71 meters tall, Almada is known for his agility and playmaking abilities, making him a valuable asset to the Lyon team.

Six months in Botafogo, then arrival in Lyon in January

Before joining OL, Almada will spend six months at Botafogo to finish the Brazilian season. This period should allow him to prepare well for his new role in France. Almada, who was also selected for the Olympic Games in France, will bring considerable experience and skills to OL.

The transfer had been in the works for several days, with Almada having agreed to a five-year contract with OL. The final agreement with Atlanta United was reached on Sunday, securing Almada’s transfer to Europe. The total transfer fee, including potential bonuses, underscores OL’s high expectations for their new recruit.

Almada’s arrival in January will be highly anticipated by fans and club management, who are looking to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season. His creativity and vision of the field are considered essential elements which could help OL achieve their competitive objectives.

Thiago Almada has made a name for himself through his performances in MLS and has gained international recognition with the Argentina national team. His ability to get into tight spaces, deliver precise passes and score goals has made him one of the most promising young talents in football.
