A park has been closed in Illinois, USA after a giant crater suddenly formed.

The hole is estimated to be 9 meters deep and 30 meters wide.

The collapse is believed to have been caused by an active mine.

The footage is shocking. In Alton, Illinois, a park was closed after a massive sinkhole swallowed part of a football field on Wednesday. As seen in security footage obtained by CBS News, the lawn at Gordon Moore Park suddenly caved in, forming a huge hole.

“It was surreal. Kind of like a movie where the ground falls out from under you.”said Michael Haynes, director of the city’s parks and recreation department. The hole is estimated to be 30 feet deep and 100 feet wide.

An investigation in progress

The collapse is believed to be due to an active mine. “The mines have been here and in this area for decades and decades. This has never been mentioned before, so I am told it is an anomaly. We will wait until the investigation is complete.”Haynes continued. No injuries were reported.

All planned events have been canceled and Gordon Moore Park has been closed “while the investigation into the sinkhole is completed”Alton Parks and Recreation said on social media.
