Football: Messi’s coach leaves Miami for ‘personal reasons’

Argentinian Gerardo “Tata” Martino, coach of Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, is leaving the team for “personal reasons,” a source close to the club told AFP on Tuesday.

The 61-year-old former FC Barcelona coach led Inter Miami to first place in MLS during the regular season, before suffering a shock elimination in the first round of the play-offs against Atlanta on November 9.

Martino joined Miami in June 2023, just before the arrival of superstar Lionel Messi from SG.

A press conference is planned for Friday with Martino, one of the club’s owners Jorge Mas and director of Raul Sanllehi.

A former Argentinian international, Martino led Paraguay to the 2011 Copa America final before notably coaching Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina, FC Barcelona for one season (2013-2014), the Albiceleste between 2014 and 2016 then arriving in MLS in Atlanta with whom he was crowned champion in 2018.
