For Brian Riemer, things got off to a flying start in his new role as national coach of Denmark.

After a 1-2 defeat against Spain at home last Friday, there was a trip to Serbia on the program this Monday. A meeting which could allow the Danes to qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition.

To do this, we had to not give in and that was not an easy thing. Because on the other side, Serbia absolutely wanted to win and they were particularly offensive, creating numerous opportunities. But Riermer’s men were able to withstand the shock, also creating a few scoring opportunities.

In the end, the two teams ended in a goalless draw after Strahinja Pavlovic was sent off during stoppage time. A draw which therefore allowed Denmark to reach the quarters.

Croatia joins Denmark

This is also the case for Croatia, who earned a 1-1 draw against Roberto Martinez’s Portugal. João Félix opened the scoring for his team in the 33rd minute of play but Josko Gvardiola managed to equalize in the 65th minute.

While Portugal was already qualified for the quarters, Croatia had to at least get a draw to secure a place. Scotland having beaten Poland 1-2, they finished one point behind Croatia and will therefore compete in the play-offs in March.
