It’s been a while since we understood that the summer of 2025 was going to be important for the CH. And the CEO confirmed it last spring.
We know that the salary cap will continue to rise and according to what reporter Elliotte Friedman reports, there is a chance that the cap will rise by nine million dollars.
That would make $97 million available to the teams.
When we look at that for the Canadian, who has 14 players assets who already have a contract in their pocket and who will (if nothing changes) certainly be in the club’s lineup, that will provide enormous room for maneuver.
Here are the contracts currently insured.
- Patrik Laine: $8.7 million
- Nick Suzuki : 7.875 M$
- Cole Caufield : 7.85 M$
- Juraj Slafkovsky: 7.6 M$
- Brendan Gallagher : 6.5 M$
- Kaiden Guhle : 5.55 M$
- Josh Anderson : 5.5 M$
- Mike Matheson : 4.875 M$
- Kirby Dach : 3.362 M$
- Samuel Montembeault : 3.15 M$
- Alex Newhook : 2.9 M$
- Arber Xhekaj: 1.3 M$
- Justin Barron : 1.15 M$
- Lane Hutson: $0.95M (entry contract)
Among the team’s current players will be restricted free agents (Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, Emil Heineman, Jayden Struble and Cayden Primeau) and unrestricted free agents (Christian Dvorak, Joel Armia, Jake Evans, Michael Pezzetta , Lucas Condotta and David Savard).
And of course, there’s Carey Price. But his salary can be hidden in 2025-2026, once the season starts.
If we calculate all that, we see that it’s a little more than $50 million for the attackers, a little less than $14 million for the defensemen and a little more than three million dollars for Samuel Montembeault in front of the net.
And if you want a precise number: $67,262,500.
Obviously, it’s only for 14 players (and that doesn’t include Carey Price, mind you) and there will be a few restricted free agents to sign. But you’ve seen the list: no one will blow up the salary structure…
Result? If it goes up to $97M, Kent Hughes is going to have plenty of room to dance. We’re talking here about ten guys to sign (or graduate at a lower cost #Demidov #Roy #Mailloux) for around $30 million.
And even if it “only” goes up to $93 million, it’s still a lot of money.
What this means is that the GM will have the means to sign the players he wants to keep (that counts in the $30 million since I’m talking about players without a contract), but also to make a splash on the market next summer. And all the fans are waiting for it at this point.
