The FIFA Referees Committee has announced the list of referees who will officiate at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024™, scheduled from August 31 to September 22.
In total, 58 women – 18 field referees, 36 assistant referees and four reserve referees – will direct the matches.
“The U-20 Women’s World Cup is an important step in preparing potential referees for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. This edition will also allow us to continue testing video support, following the first conclusive tests carried out during the FIFA/Blue Stars Junior Tournament,” explained the chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina.
The competition in Colombia therefore promises to be historic since video support will be used, proof of FIFA’s continued commitment to supporting referees using technology. Less expensive, this system was developed following numerous requests from member associations. Unlike video refereeing assistance, video support does not require video referees. Therefore, not all incidents that could change the course of a match are automatically checked.
Video support is requested at the request of coaches when they believe that a clear error has been made in relation to one of the following four situations: goal scored/not scored, penalty/no penalty, direct red card or mistaken identity . It should be noted that coaches are only entitled to a limited number of analysis requests, or “challenges”.
“We are delighted to experience this competition in a country like Colombia, which is so passionate about football. From a refereeing point of view, the U-20 Women’s World Cup will leave an important legacy in the country,” said Massimo Busacca, director of the FIFA Refereeing sub-division.
