Ivory Coast qualified for CAN 2025 without playing!

Reigning African champion, Ivory Coast validated its ticket for the final phase of CAN 2025 this Wednesday. All without playing and thanks to the draw between Chad and Sierra Leone (1-1).

In a meeting relocated to… Ivory Coast, and more precisely at the Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny in Abidjan, Abu Dumbuya opened the scoring in favor of the Leone Stars with a powerful strike which rocketed into the top corner (29th). But midfielder Mahamat Thiam, who plays in Georgia, quickly equalized for the Sao du Chad from a Panenka penalty (35th).

The score did not change after that. To the great misfortune of both teams… Indeed, this sharing of points confirms the elimination of Chad, whose first participation in the CAN will wait. It also complicates the situation for Sierra Leone, which will be eliminated if Zambia beats the Ivory Coast Friday. Otherwise, the Leone Stars will face a “final” against the Chipolopolos next week.

Ivory Coast 10th qualified for CAN

Conversely, the big winner of the evening is Côte d’Ivoire! Like Equatorial Guinea a little earlier, the Elephants qualified without playing, becoming the 10th country to punch their ticket for the CAN in Morocco. The holder cannot in fact be joined by the 3rd, Sierra Leone (4 points behind and which only has one match to play) nor Chad (last with 6 points behind). Emerse Faé’s men will still be keen to definitively secure first place in this group G by winning on Friday in Ndola.

The 10 countries (out of 24) qualified for CAN 2025

  • Morocco
  • Burkina Faso
  • Cameroon
  • Algeria
  • RD Congo
  • Senegal
