Lane Hutson has been turning a lot of heads since the start of the season. In his rookie year, he already amassed 10 points in 16 games while being on the first defensive pair.
He plays a lot of minutes, but doesn’t look exhausted on the ice at the end of the game.
While his presence seems crucial for the CH present, not all hockey experts agree.
Jeff O’Neill, columnist for TSN, mentioned on the show OverDrive that he would send Lane Hutson to Laval.
He is of the opinion that he must avoid the current disaster at CH and that he must go and dominate the American League.
Both of his colleagues, Bryan Hayes and Jamie McLennan, agreed with his point.
Chris Johnston, TSN analyst, who was their guest, mentioned that it would not be a failure if the CH took this path.
The point that O’Neill brings up is interesting when we talk about the losing culture that the CH goes through. The veterans aren’t giving enough and he doesn’t want Hutson to get tainted.
But is this really the right way to do it? You always learn better in defeat than in victory and since Hutson is a pillar of the team in the long term, it is good that he is going through this period so that when the time comes to welcome recruits younger than him, he will be able to talk to them about difficult times and what to do to avoid getting there.
The most important thing in all of this is that Hutson doesn’t take any bad tricks, that he doesn’t try to do too much by neglecting his defensive responsibilities. Until we see signs like this, the words Huston and Laval cannot be used in the same sentence.
