The Swiss Football League is pleased to announce the composition of the team for the 2023/24 dieci Challenge League season. The selection is based on data, facts and figures concerning the performances of the players during the entire season which has just ended, paying tribute to the players who particularly distinguished themselves this season.

Goalie

Timothy Fayulu (FC Sion)
Fayulu delivered top performances consistently throughout the season and was an unfailing support for his team. The Sion goalkeeper had the best defense rate of all goalkeepers in the DCL, with 73.9% saves. In addition, he played 18 matches without conceding a goal, which makes him, by far, number 1 in his category this season.

Defense

Left back: Malik Sawadogo (FC Stade Nyonnais)
Sawadogo impressed with his endurance and his strong defensive work, which contributed decisively to the stability of the Nyon team.

Right back: Zachary Athekame (Neuchâtel Xamax FCS)
Athekame shone with his speed and ability to engage offensively, creating an additional asset for the Xamaxian offensive. With 3,135 minutes of play, he is also the 2nd outfield player to have played the most minutes this season in DCL.

Central defender: Reto Ziegler (FC Sion)
Thanks to his incomparable experience, Ziegler brought calm and stability to the defensive compartment of FC Sion and he was often the decisive man in delicate situations. With 3,142 minutes of play, he is the player who has played the longest time among all DCL field players. With 2115 passes delivered, he is also the 2nd DCL player to have sent the highest number of passes (the 1st being Marco Bürki from FC Thun).

Central defender: Joël Schmied (FC Sion)
Schmied convinced with his power in duels and his good defensive positioning, which allowed him to thwart many dangerous opponent attacks.

Midfielder

Right winger: Dejan Djokic (FC Vaduz)
Djokic was a constant agitator on the right flank, feared for his dribbling and ability to create scoring chances. In 36 matches, he was involved in no less than 16 goals (scoring 14 goals and providing 2 assists).

Left winger: Nikola Gjorgjev (FC Aarau)
Gjorgjev shone with his speed and precise crosses, which often caused dangerous situations for opposing defenses. The 26-year-old Macedonian has proven to be a constant danger to his opponents, as he has been directly involved in 17 goals in 34 appearances (9 goals and 8 assists).

Central Midfield: Valon Fazliu (FC Aarau)
This season again, Valon Fazliu has proven to be an indispensable asset for the colors of FC Aarau. Fazliu was the creative mastermind of the Aargau midfielder, distinguishing himself with precise passing and his understanding of the game. In 34 appearances, he collected a remarkable 18 points (14 goals and 4 assists).

Central midfielder: Théo Golliard (FC Vaduz)
Golliard showed good performances as a distributor of the game and played a decisive role in directing the Liechtensteiners’ maneuver. With 3,076 minutes of play, the 21-year-old Swiss is the 3rd most used outfield player this season.

Attack

Dejan Sorgic (FC Sion)
With his scoring qualities and his ability to score decisive goals in the penalty area, Sorgic has proven himself to be a valuable attacker, indispensable to FC Sion. It is not for nothing that this experienced striker finished DCL’s top scorer with 16 goals. It was the first time that the 34-year-old had scored so many times in one season (previously, however, he had already scored 15 Super League goals with Thun in 2016/17 and 2018/19).

Daniel Dos Santos (FC Thun)
Dos Santos convinced with his speed and shooting accuracy, which made him one of the most dangerous strikers in the entire league. With 73 goals, FC Thun was DCL’s best attack. Daniel Dos Santos, U21 international, contributed greatly to this. In 35 appearances, he collected 19 points (10 goals and 9 assists).

Coach:

Didier Tholot (FC Sion)
Coach Didier Tholot guided the Valaisans in a sovereign manner in their return to the Credit Suisse Super League. The 60-year-old Frenchman is already coaching FC Sion for the fourth time! He managed to restore calm after a chaotic season. Under Tholot’s leadership, Sion has only lost 3 times this season (a new best mark for the DCL), beaten by only one opponent, its runner-up, Thun.
