This is the somewhat surprising news of the day: KRC Genk tried to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy as coach.

Finally, Genk fell back on Thorsten Finkarrived from Saint-Trond. Fink fits in perfectly with Limburgers, says football director Dimitri De Conde in the podcast Terril Talks.

De Condé stressed that Fink immediately left a strong impression, which was important for Genk, especially after a disappointing season under Wouter Vrancken. Genk clearly needed an experienced coach. Besides Fink, however, two other coaches were on the shortlist.

Additionally, De Condé revealed that Genk had held discussions with Ruud van Nistelrooy. Although Van Nistelrooy was a big name, his coaching experience was too limited, as he had only coached one season at PSV. Van Nistelrooy eventually became an assistant coach at Manchester United.

In addition, Genk spoke with Johan Van Rumstwho had already worked as an assistant at the club in the past. According to De Condé, Van Rumst has everything it takes to become a great coach, and the club should probably continue to follow him.

With Fink at the helm, Genk seem to have made a good choice for now. De Condé is satisfied with this decision and hopes that the coach can continue to develop the team, current leader of the Pro League.
