TV rights: Canal+ will be green, the big announcement for June 20

Canal+ providing absolutely no solution to French football, the League has taken a radical decision which has a good chance of being ratified within a week. the LFP will go it alone, whatever the cost!

For once, French football remains united despite the crisis situation it is going through on the subject of television rights for Ligue 1 which have still not been allocated two months before the resumption. Everyone is in line behind Vincent Labrune to find the best deal possible and save face, while no concrete solution is about to be found. It must be said that, after Emmanuel Macron’s pressure to find a solution, Canal+ seemed to be able to make a financial effort to remunerate BeIN Sports more generously and distribute the Qatari channel which had agreed to position itself for a global takeover. of the order of 600 to 700 million euros. But clearly upset by its poor treatment in recent years, Vincent Bolloré’s channel claims to have made other choices since then, and is waiting to see who will have the rights to possibly position itself afterwards.

The LFP calls everyone

Enough to put all of French football on edge, while platforms like Amazon or DAZN have returned to the negotiating table, but with very low offers. The only way out of this impasse is a channel created by the LFP which would therefore make distributors pay to be broadcast, and also viewers of course, but would generate much lower income initially. However, this would allow the League to keep all the cards in hand, and why not sell the rights in one or two years in the event of a good offer.

It is this solution that is now being worked on ardently at the LFP, and should be presented next Thursday, June 20, to the League’s board of directors. The League has approached operators (SFR, Bouygues, Orange, Free), and even platforms (DAZN, Amazon) to sell its content which would include 100% of Ligue 1. The goal is, by Thursday, to have an idea of the financial gain from this operation which is now plan A. Because Canal+ gives no sign of wanting to discuss or negotiate, and French football is well on its way to setting up its own channel and announcing this unprecedented choice in a short week from now on.
