Football: A supporter of the Bayern Munich – Benfica match dies

A spectator at the Allianz Arena who attended the Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Benfica died on Wednesday evening. He was first resuscitated several times in the stands before being transported to hospital. He died before getting there.

“About an hour after the final whistle we received the sad news that the supporter had died on the way to hospital. FC Bayern is in mourning alongside those close to it,” the club communicated.

From the 3rd minute, the ultras of the Munich Südkurve at the Allianz Arena stopped their encouragement while the rescuers intervened in the southeast sector of the stadium.

At the half-hour mark, while the rescuers left the area, the ultras made an announcement on the megaphone, and removed the flags from their emblematic stand.

“Due to an emergency medical intervention, there are currently no cheering chants from Bayern fans,” Bayern tweeted during the first half.

The silence continued after the locker room, only the Benfica supporters were audible in the stadium of 75,000 spectators.

“We didn’t know it was because of a medical emergency. It’s absolutely understandable that there was no encouragement. We did not celebrate this victory in the locker room,” commented Bayern captain Manuel Neuer in the mixed zone.

“It’s not easy to talk about . We did not celebrate as we normally do for a success,” added Munich coach Vincent Kompany at a press conference.
