Coco Gauff qualified for the semi-finals of the WTA Masters in Riyadh by beating Iga Swiatek 6-3 6-4. The Polish woman’s defeat means that Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka will end the year as No. 1.
Coco Gauff (WTA 3) caused a certain surprise with her sovereign success. The American thus beat Iga Swiatek (WTA 2) for only the second time in thirteen duels. She had lost the last six matches. This victory already gives him a ticket to the last four.
For her part, the Pole can still qualify by beating the American Jessica Pegula, who is already eliminated. But Swiatek will have to hope that the Czech Barbora Krejcikova does not win against Gauff in her last match.
Earlier, Krejcikova (WTA 13) had clearly dominated Pegula (WTA 6) in two sets, 6-3 6-3. The Czech won the first set on her second break point. In the second set, Pegula trailed 2-0. Returning, she conceded her serve at 4-3 to Krejcikova on two double faults.
