the essential
There is no noise from the engines, but the enthusiasm of the participants more than makes up for it. Yesterday, thirteen teams took part in the first edition of this unique event.

On the asphalt overheated by the sun, one of the competitors notices that there are chicanes. Surprise ! It’s already not easy to go backwards, but the organizers of the office chair race wanted to spice up the exercise a little. They added two chicanes. Little by little, the thirteen teams registered for this premiere recognize the locations. The track is located on the starting line of the Albi circuit. The organizers defined a small route which they completed in 2m10. This is where, for an hour, the competitors will have to do as many laps as possible to win the event.

To achieve this, the different teams showed imagination. They worked on the design of the chairs, even going so far as to add a buoy in the shape of a pink flamingo. To absorb shocks? We see that the name of the vehicles gave rise to some research. Some teams worked on the wheels and ergonomics. “We did tests,” emphasizes a participant, helmet securely attached to the head, knee pads and elbow protectors well secured. Others have chosen a simple office chair, without fuss, without armrest. “We go back to the origins, simplicity,” explain with a laugh the three friends, who have found two other reinforcements. The race, like the 24 hours of Le Mans, is contested in teams of 6 or 3. The relays are of whatever length you want.

Once this first discovery is over, all the teams are called to the starting line for a little warm-up. No question of slamming yourself during qualifying! Shoulder rotations, stretching, torso rotation, ankle flexibility… And everyone is ready.

Time for free practice. And then quickly, the majority of participants realize that it is not going to be an easy game. And yes moving backwards requires some skills. And a lot of anticipation, especially in terms of trajectories, or else we risk a big stiff neck! On the other hand, we’re going to laugh. And that is the aim of this event organized by the Isatis Lions club. Raising funds for two associations: Children’s Cancer Health and Spama (palliative care and maternity support).

On the track, the first buffers take place between competitors, but also against chicanes and barriers. Moving forward while going backwards is not easy… Some people go for it willingly. It’s best not to cross paths with them during the race. Others clearly save themselves by cutting in the middle of the track. To better hide their game?

In a few minutes, the tests will take place. The serious things begin.
