Novak Djokovic will not be in Turin to defend his title: the Serbian, seven-time winner of the ATP Masters, announced on Tuesday that he was giving up due to an injury to compete in the event which brings together the eight best players of the year ( November 10-17).

“It is an honor to qualify to play the ATP Masters in Turin and I was happy to be there, but due to an injury I will not be playing next week,” he wrote on his Instagram account.

“My apologies to those who had planned to come see me. I wish all the players a good tournament, see you soon,” added the double title holder, aged 37.

If he does not specify the nature of his injury, Djokovic’s withdrawal is not a surprise.

The former world No.1, now fifth in the ATP rankings, had already withdrawn from the Masters 1000 in and had previously suggested that his season was over.

If he occupies sixth place in “The Race”, the annual ATP ranking which determines the eight participants in the Masters, his 2024 season has been complicated. He did not win any ATP titles this year, a first since 2006, and found himself in the shadow of the Italian Jannik Sinner and the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

“Nole” however saved his year by winning the Olympic singles title in Paris, the only one missing from his immense list of 24 Grand Slam titles.

His withdrawal puts an end to the suspense over the names of the last three participants in the 2024 Masters: in addition to Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz, already assured of participating, Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev have now their ticket in their pocket for the last tournament of the season.
