Max Verstappen (Red Bull) is making a little more of a place in the history of Formula 1. One step away from a fourth world title to become the equal of Alain Prost or Sebastian Vettel, the Dutchman erased the record for time spent at the top of the drivers’ championship with 897 consecutive days. He does better than Michael Schumacher and his 896 days between September 2000 and March 2003.

Verstappen races towards 1,000 days

Before Verstappen, Charles Leclerc is the last F1 driver to have tasted the top spot in the drivers’ championship. It was in 2022 before the Spanish GP. Since then, “Mad Max” has not let go of the bar, spending the entire 2023 season in the lead.

In the event of a world title, which could be validated as early as November 24 in Las Vegas, Max Verstappen would become the first driver in history to spend 1,000 consecutive days at the top of the drivers’ championship. A new record, pending that of the number of world champion titles held by Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton (7).
