Jan Vertonghen has long been a pillar of the Red Devils’ defense. At the last Euro in Germany, he was still among the starters, but after the tournament, the defender decided to put an end to his international career.

A defense in difficulty without Vertonghen

The Red Devils’ defense continues to pose a problem, and the absence of Vertonghen’s experience is felt. Although currently injured with Anderlecht, Vertonghen was clear about his withdrawal when raising the issue in an interview with Sporza.

A possible return?

A possible return of Vertonghen to the selection would be a big surprise for the supporters. However, despite his current injuries, the temptation still seems present. “It’s a chapter that I have closed and to which I am completely faithful. It always does something to me to see them play,” he admitted.

A new priority for Vertonghen

Vertonghen has expressed his desire to fully concentrate on his recovery with Anderlecht. Although he recognizes that the end of his international career is definitive, he remains attached to the Red Devils: “It no longer corresponds to this stage of my career. I will support them from afar, but I will not return to the selection.”

Make way for the new generation

Vertonghen was part of the Golden Generation, but the national team is now experiencing a transition to a new generation. Young talents like Matte Smets are taking over, but the results are difficult to convince. Domenico Tedesco, the coach, is under great pressure after a disappointing Euro.
