The five-time NBA champion (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014) will be replaced by his first assistant, Mitch Johnson (37), already at work on Saturday against the Wolves. The Seattle native, trained at Stanford University, never played in the NBA and ended his professional career after three seasons between G-League and Europe. He joined the Spurs staff in 2019 and had already made up for Popovich's absence in March 2023.
