Alex Ovechkin is on a roll and he shows no signs of stopping.

The Washington Capitals forward scored in a fourth straight game to record the 860th goal of his career on Sunday in a 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

In the hunt for Wayne Gretzky’s record, the Russian is 34 goals behind “La Merveille”.

The Capitals took advantage of a numerical advantage at the end of the first period. Well installed in the office that he is recognized for, Ovechkin unleashed a powerful throw that made the strings vibrate. It tied the game 1-1. It was Ovechkin’s seventh goal this season and sixth in as many games.

Brandon Duhaime gave the Capitals the lead just 33 seconds after Ovechkin’s goal. Washington thus retired to the locker room after 20 minutes of play in control 2 to 1.

It was from this moment that the Hurricanes woke up. Martin Necas scored for a sixth time this season and Dmitry Orlov put the Canes in the lead after just six minutes in the middle period.

Andrei Svechnikov confirmed his team’s victory with less than 10 seconds left in the game with an empty-net goal.

Charlie Lindgren stopped 40 pucks in the loss. Pyotr Kochetkov made 20 saves for the Canes.

The Hurricanes won a sixth straight game.
