If he continues to score as much as he did at the start of the season, Alexander Ovechkin could well beat Wayne Gretzky’s record in 2024-2025.
On Sunday, his Washington Capitals suffered a 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena, but the captain hit the target. During a first-period power play, Ovechkin scored a goal in his fourth straight game.

The 39-year-old Russian now has seven goals to his name since the start of the campaign. In his career, this brings his total to 860, only 34 less than the mark to beat for “the Wonder”.
At the current rate, Ovechkin would cross a 10e times the plateau of 50 goals in a season.
Unfortunately for him, the Capitals were unable to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes and one of his former teammates came to steal the spotlight. Defender Dmitry Orlov scored twice.
Martin Necas had a strong duel with three points, including the 2-2 equalizing goal at the start of the second period.
The Defenseless Kraken
In Boston, the Seattle Kraken was blanked for a second time in a row, falling 2-0 to the Bruins.
The Washington State club was even kept off the scoresheet twice in 24 hours, as the Ottawa Senators beat them 3-0 on Saturday.
In today’s game, Justin Brazeau scored his fourth goal of the campaign. Charlie Coyle was the other scorer for the Bruins, who showed off his Sunday hands to beat goaltender Joey Daccord in a good way.
The Kraken will try to end its streak of more than 120 minutes without scoring Tuesday, against the Colorado Avalanche.
