After doing a very good job at Sint-Truiden last season, Thorsten Fink joined KRC Genk last summer. In an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws, the German coach, however, revealed that he could have joined another Belgian club.
Sint-Truiden did everything to keep Fink but the Trudonnaires quickly realized that it would be impossible for them to retain the German coach.
Marc Degryse, who hoped to see Fink replace Ronny Deila at Club Brugge, recently spoke with the former Bayern Munich player. During this discussion, the Genk coach revealed that he could have joined another Belgian club last summer.
Westerlo tried it
“I loved my time at Sint-Truiden, but it was not a club where I could succeed in the long term. Once the season ended, I had discussions with Westerlo, but Genk always been my preference.”
The Limburgers did everything they could to come to Fink. They notably went to look for Matte Smets and Jarne Steuckers, the two favorites of the German coach in Saint-Trond.
The best Belgian team of the moment
What is certain is that Fink must not regret his choice. His team currently offers attractive football and is at the top of the championship with no less than 5 points ahead of Antwerp, its runner-up. The two teams will meet this Sunday as part of the 13th day of JPL.
