DOUALA (Cameroon) – ASB Makomeno closed the final round with another victory, while FAP followed the same path.
DR Congo champions ASB Makomeno are just one game away from securing one of the two tickets offered to Zone 5 teams for the Women’s Basketball League Africa 2024 (WBLA), after a third consecutive victory on Thursday.
Cameroon’s FAP, in the second match of the day in Douala, did not disappoint its fans by making a strong comeback to post a second victory in three matches.
Makomeno is only one match away from 8 points provided they win their next meeting while FAP hopes for a good outing against CNSS who share the same number of points with two victories and one defeat respectively.
Here is how the meeting took place at the Japoma Multi Sports Complex, in Douala
Makomeno remains dominant
Congolese club ASB Makomeno have won three games in three matches, allowing them to stay in the lead with a game in hand.
ASB Makomeno started on a good note in the first quarter with a score of 21-10 and continued in the second quarter 13-10 in what appeared to be NABA’s contained attack with hope to do better in the second half.
This was not the case, as Makomeno started the third quarter with a bang, with a score of 19 to 9. The final quarter was no different as it ended with a score of 20-9.
Kadiatou Coulibaly’s double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) proved the consistency of ASB Makomeno who recorded a third consecutive victory of 73-38 on NABA.
She helped her team defeat the Gabonese and condemn them to last place in the standings without a win in four matches. Just like Coulibaly, teammate Ruth Musoga added 16 points, while Milove Muembia followed with 10 points to ensure NABA had no chance of getting close to victory.
Although Macolombe Mougongougou of NABA tried in his own way to cause problems for his opponent by scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, it was not enough to panic coach Samuel Mutsvanga.
The FAP wins against the DBF
A scare in the first quarter from DBF (20-19) was all FAP needed to come back to reality.
Both teams needed this match to stay in the race, but the FAP players proved that they were more hungry for victories and did not want to disappoint their supporters. To show that it was the better team, FAP started the second quarter with more determination taking the score 17-15 and maintained it for the remaining two quarters 19-13 and 22-13, s ‘imposing 77-61.
Sema Ekah came off the FAP bench to score her team’s best score with 13 points, with duo Josiane Tientcheu and Cynthia Amayaba adding 11 points each, while Theresa Ebiega scored 10 points.
DBF’s Susanne Even scored 17 points, Larissa Mbong 13 and Myriam Guiolobo 12, but it was not enough to give their team victory in a match that saw five lead changes.
It was a home derby for both Cameroonian teams, so the victory was important for each of them, but it turned out that FAP needed a victory more and did not hesitate to impose yourself.
