Vevey Riviera did not win its case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) according to information from Radio Chablais. The Vaudois club will therefore have to play in the 1st league.
We had to wait a few weeks and the start of the SBL championship, but the decision was made: Vevey Riviera will have to play in the 1st league and not in the highest division of the country.
Nine teams in SBL
As a reminder, the Galeries du Rivage club did not receive its license last August from the SBL. The body considered the debts to be too high. Vevey contested this decision and decided to go to the CAS. The hearing was held on Wednesday in Lausanne and visibly confirmed the SBL’s decision. There will therefore only be nine teams this season in the first division.
The general secretary of Swiss Basketball Erik Lehmann regrets seeing a club with a rich past like Vevey having to return to the third division: “It is never a good signal to see a club suffer administrative relegation. We supported him, but we have to be fair to the other elite clubs. But with its junior movement and getting into compliance, I hope that Vevey will be able to move up the ranks.“
