The Canadian’s decision to choose Lane Hutson, in the second round of the 2022 NHL draft, generated great excitement among CH fans.

During his draft year, many experts spoke of him as the best defender of his vintage in terms of pure talent. Two years later, although it’s still very early, Lane Hutson is on track to have a very promising career in the NHL.

Since arriving in the NHL, Hutson continues to turn heads in the hockey world. The young 20-year-old defender is having an excellent start to the season. His skills with the puck and his ease on the skate make him a formidable player in the offensive zone. However, despite his small size, Hutson does very well in his own zone. He is extremely combative with his stick and his zone exits are precise and effective.

In last week’s loss to the Los Angeles Kings, Hutson logged 30:05 of ice time. He became the 5th defenseman aged 20 or younger to spend at least 30 minutes on the ice in a game that did not require overtime since the 2000-2001 season.

Last night, the American defender had another very good evening of work with an assist and a playing time of 23:49. He thus became the first defenseman in team history to obtain seven assists in his first ten games.

Hutson represents a fundamental core to the reconstruction of the Canadiens. It will be interesting to see if he can continue his momentum and perhaps fight for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the best rookie of the season.
