The Italian Andrea Vendrame won the 19th stage of the Tour of Italy alone on Friday in Sappada after a long breakaway, confirming the resounding health of his Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale team.

This is, after 2021, the second stage victory in the Giro for Vendrame who lost his breakaway companions 30 kilometers from the finish.

He was part of a group of nineteen runners, who started far in front. In the end, the peloton of favorites grouped around the pink jersey Tadej Pogacar crossed the line 16 minutes behind the winner.

Like Thursday, the Zurich resident Fabian Lienhard (Groupama-FDJ) and the Vaudois Robin Froidevaux (Tudor) crossed the finish line together in 113th and 114th places, 29’44’ behind the winner.

The fall of Thomas

Their arrival was marked by the fall of Geraint Thomas six kilometers from the finish. The Welshman, third in the general classification, went to the ground without apparent gravity, touching the rear wheel of Antonio Tiberi in front of him, just as things were starting to get lively.

The leader of Ineos was forced to change bikes. But the other leaders of the peloton immediately got up to wait for him and he was able to cross the line with Pogacar, who is still 7’42” ahead of Daniel Martinez and 8’04” over Thomas in the general standings at two stages of arrival.

The success of Vendrame confirmed the incredible dynamic of the Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale team, which already has 22 victories since the start of the season, compared to nine over the entire year of 2023.

Bluffing

Vendrame pulled off a real bluff to get rid of, in a descent, the most dangerous riders in his group – only the stage winners in this Giro with Julian Alaphilippe, Jhonatan Narvaez, Georg Steinhauser and Pelayo Sanchez.

These men in form, logical favorites for the stage victory, were slow to react, marking each other. And when they finally set off on the Cima Sappada, the last rather rolling climb of the day (8.3 km at 4.8%), it was already too late.

Vendrame was able to savor for a long time, celebrating his feat with his sports director. Sanchez and Steinhauser arrived about a minute later, followed by a small Alaphilippe group at two and a half minutes.
