On Wednesday, Ineos Britannia’s double victory unearthed an improbable statistic: a British boat won two points in the America’s Cup for the first time since 1934. But after Friday’s two regattas (Thursday was a rest day) , the following question came back like a boomerang: will we have to wait another 90 years for the next two? Team New Zealand quickly dashed the hopes of a crazy comeback by winning twice by a comfortable margin (1 minute 13 then 55 seconds).

The cold snap that hit Barcelona on Thursday evening spread on Friday to a body of water blown by a steady but changeable land breeze, which the Kiwis coped with with a mastery that even Ben Ainslie, the helmsman British, found it “very impressive”. The Defender now leads 6-2 and is just one victory away from lifting the silver ewer for the third time in a row, a feat not seen since the San Diego Yacht Club between 1987 and 1992. The affair should be heard from this weekend, but the almost zero wind forecast for Saturday and especially Sunday on the coasts of Barcelona risks postponing the final blow until the beginning of next week.
