The situation between Marc Brys, Cameroon coach, and Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Federation, reached a critical point during the last international break. Brys and Eto’o have been at odds for some time, leading to growing tensions. Brys had even threatened to resign in the face of pressure from the former Cameroonian football star.

Despite Samuel Eto’o being suspended by UEFA, acts of intimidation against Brys continued, exacerbating an already tense situation.

The triggering event

The breaking point came in the last international match, where Cameroon beat Kenya 4-1. Brys’ assistant Joachim Mununga was not listed as an official for this match, prompting Brys to express his anger. “I am very angry. The federation acted behind my back and did not include my assistant on the list of officials. I promise you that if this happens again, I will resign immediately,” he said.

Brys’ response

In an interview with Sporza, Marc Brys clarified the situation and made a firm decision regarding his future. “No, I am not going to resign,” he said, while sending a new dig at Eto’o. “I prefer not to pay too much attention to these shenanigans, they don’t deserve it. I’m looking forward to achieving a good result at the Africa Cup of Nations, with boldness and confidence.”

A tumultuous period

Brys acknowledges that his tenure at the head of Cameroon has been far from peaceful. “The first few months were very turbulent,” he admits. “But I quickly established a good relationship with the players, which is essential to work well and resolve problems. Now, members of the Cameroonian federation are integrated into our staff.”

Brys has therefore backtracked on his resignation threats and is focusing on his future goals with Cameroon. He is aiming for a good run at the CAN and is already preparing the ground for the World Cup. “In the long term, we want to show the full potential of this team, but this will require better management of the team,” he concludes, displaying great ambitions.
