TOP 14. Antoine Dupont’s stunning return: how Rory Kockott pushed him to be better

Last Saturday, Antoine Dupont struck hard by scoring an epic hat-trick against Clermont in the Top 14. This resounding return put the scrum-half back at the center of all discussions. But for David Darricarrère, the man who launched him into the pros in it is only a logical continuation in the progression of an already exceptional player.

It also thrived on competition.

Darricarrère remembers this young prodigy, whom he already describes as a “ phenomenon » at the time. “Afterwards, he obviously grew, he grew physically, tactically, technically. He also benefited from all the coaches he had. […] He’s an exceptional boy,” he confided on Sud Radio. The former coach’s words are unequivocal: Dupont is, according to him, the best player in the world, and this is just the beginning.

The manager also emphasizes the importance of competition to build the mentality of a champion. “He also thrived on the competition he had nearby, I’m thinking in particular of Rory […] It really pissed him off at times.,” he adds. For Darricarrère, this rage to win and this ability to surpass oneself are the signs of an extraordinary champion, which will have a lasting impact on French rugby.

Antoine Dupont, for his part, remains humble and prefers to highlight the collective. “I really enjoyed the holidays, but every time I came to training, I wanted to get back on the field with my friends,” he told Canal+ via La Dépêche. It is this simplicity that pleases supporters so much and which reinforces his image as a natural leader at Stade Toulousain.

On Saturday, Dupont’s hat-trick caused talk beyond the borders of rugby, becoming one of the fastest in the history of the Top 14. An impressive performance which even provoked strong reactions, such as that of Cyrille Guimard, the former cycling team director, who spoke about doping.

Antoine Dupont, a unique player

However, for Darricarrère, Dupont’s magic lies in his pure talent and work ethic. “We have rarely seen this from a French rugby player […] all generations combined,” he concludes. At only 27 years old, Dupont continues to surpriseand to delight the supporters.

With this hat-trick, Antoine Dupont only strengthens his legend. For Darricarrère, as for lovers of the oval ball, one thing is certain: this player is a blessing for French rugby. And especially for Stade Toulousain which still hopes to win many titles with this golden generation.
